Test Format

How the USCIS Civics Test Works

🎯 Standard Test (Most Applicants)

  • Officer asks up to 10 questions from the 100
  • You must correctly answer at least 6 to pass
  • Questions are asked and answered verbally
  • If you answer 6 correctly before all 10 are asked, you pass immediately
  • You have up to 3 attempts at each question

⭐ Modified Test (65+ with 20+ Years)

  • Only the 20 questions marked with an asterisk (*) apply
  • Officer still asks up to 10, you still need 6 correct
  • You may take the civics test in your native language
  • You still must pass the English reading and writing test unless medically exempt
  • Bring proof of age and permanent residence duration
