A simple plan that works

  1. Pick your test version

Check the date on your N-400 receipt notice. On or after October 20, 2025 means the 2025 test.

  2. Practice a little every day

Fifteen minutes of flashcards and one mock test a day beats a long session once a week.

  3. Rehearse the interview out loud

Answer the officer's questions aloud and practice the reading and writing sentences.

How many questions are on the U.S. citizenship test?

It depends on when you filed Form N-400.

Filed on or after October 20, 2025: you take the 2025 civics test. You study 128 questions, the officer asks up to 20, and you need 12 correct answers to pass. The officer stops once you answer 12 correctly or miss 9.

Filed before October 20, 2025: you take the 2008 test. You study 100 questions, the officer asks up to 10, and you need 6 correct answers.

What is on the English test?

There are three parts. Speaking is judged during the whole interview. For reading, you read one of up to three sentences correctly out loud. For writing, you write one of up to three sentences correctly as the officer reads it.

What if I am 65 or older?

If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20 years or more when you file, you only study 20 specially marked questions. The officer asks 10 of them and you need 6 correct. You may also take the civics test in your own language with an interpreter.

What happens if I fail the test?

You get a second chance. USCIS schedules a re-exam, usually 60 to 90 days after your first interview, and you only retake the part you did not pass (English, civics, or both).
