What Happens During Your Citizenship Interview?

Check-In & Identity

Arrive early. Bring your Green Card, passport, appointment letter, and any requested documents. The officer verifies your identity before beginning.

English & Civics Test

The officer tests your English (read 1 sentence, write 1 sentence) and asks up to 10 civics questions. You need 6 correct answers to pass.

N-400 Application Review

The officer reviews your N-400 answers with you. Answer truthfully and consistently. The full interview takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Common USCIS Officer Questions & How to Answer

Practice these questions out loud. The more you rehearse, the more confident you will feel on interview day.

Please raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth?
Sample Answer: Yes, I do.
Always answer yes. This is a sworn oath before the interview begins.
What is your full legal name?
Sample Answer: State your full name exactly as it appears on your N-400 application.
Speak slowly and clearly. Spell your name if the officer asks.
What is your current address?
Sample Answer: Give your full home address including street, city, state, and zip code.
Make sure it matches your N-400 application exactly.
Why do you want to become a U.S. citizen?
Sample Answer: Share personal reasons such as voting rights, serving your community, bringing family, or traveling with a U.S. passport.
Be genuine and specific. Officers appreciate honest, personal answers.
Have you ever been arrested, cited, or detained by police?
Sample Answer: Answer truthfully. If yes, bring certified court documents to your interview.
Honesty is essential. Lying on your application is grounds for denial.
Are you willing to bear arms for the United States?
Sample Answer: Yes, I am willing to bear arms for the United States.
If you have a religious objection, discuss with an immigration attorney before your interview.
Have you been a member of the Communist Party or any terrorist organization?
Sample Answer: No. For almost all applicants this is the correct answer.
If the answer is yes, consult an immigration attorney immediately before attending.
Are you willing to take the full Oath of Allegiance?
Sample Answer: Yes, I am willing to take the full Oath of Allegiance.
Know the Oath of Allegiance text. You will recite it at your naturalization ceremony.

  • Form N-400 interview appointment notice
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Valid passport or travel document
  • State-issued ID or driver license
  • All travel documents for trips outside the U.S.
  • Any other documents requested in your appointment letter

💡 Day-Of Tips

  • Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before your appointment time
  • Dress professionally in business casual clothing
  • Speak clearly at a natural pace
  • Say I do not understand if confused, never guess
  • Answer only what is asked, do not volunteer extra information
  • Stay calm, it is okay to pause before answering
  • Turn off your phone before entering the building
