Which PDF do you need?
Your test version depends on the date USCIS received your Form N-400. It is printed on your receipt notice (Form I-797C).
- Received on or after October 20, 2025: download the 128 questions (2025 test). The officer asks up to 20 and you need 12 correct.
- Received before October 20, 2025: download the 100 questions (2008 test). The officer asks up to 10 and you need 6 correct.
- 65 or older with 20 years as a permanent resident: you only need the 20 questions marked 65/20, and you may take the test in your own language.
The English and Spanish versions show each question in English, the way the officer asks it, with a Spanish translation underneath. The civics test is given in English unless you qualify for an exception, so study the English wording and use the translation to understand it.
How to study with the printed list
- Study one topic at a time, not the whole list at once. Five to eight new questions a day is plenty.
- Cover the answers with a sheet of paper and say each answer out loud. The real test is spoken.
- Mark the questions you miss and review them the next day.
- Once a week, take a full mock test online to practice under the real pass rules.
Where these lists come from
Every question and answer comes from the official lists USCIS publishes: "128 Civics Questions and Answers (2025 version)" and "100 Civics Questions and Answers (2008 version)". The Spanish text of the 2008 list is the official USCIS translation. USCIS has not published a Spanish version of the 2025 list, so that translation is ours and is meant only for study.
A few answers change after elections and appointments, such as the names of the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House and Chief Justice. We update these PDFs when that happens, and the date at the top of each file shows when the answers were last checked.
Common questions
Are these PDFs really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no cost. You may print them and share them with family, classes and study groups.
Can I take the PDF into the interview?
No. You may not use notes during the civics test. Study with the PDF at home, then practice answering without it.
Is the civics test multiple choice?
No. The officer reads each question out loud and you answer out loud. That is why saying the answers aloud while you study matters.
How do I know which test version I will take?
Look at the received date on your N-400 receipt notice. On or after October 20, 2025 means the 2025 test with 128 questions. Before that date means the 2008 test with 100 questions.
