During your naturalization interview the USCIS officer goes through your Form N-400 in detail, asking you to confirm your answers and often asking follow-up questions. Knowing what to expect makes this portion much less stressful.
Basic Personal Information Questions
- Please state your full legal name for the record.
- What is your current home address?
- What is your date and place of birth?
- What is your current marital status?
- Are you currently employed? What is your occupation and your employer name?
Residency and Travel Questions
- Have you lived at your current address since you filed your N-400 application?
- Have you taken any trips outside the United States lasting 24 hours or more during the required period?
- Did any of your trips outside the United States last 6 months or longer?
- Have you claimed non-resident status on any tax returns or failed to file required taxes?
Oath and Allegiance Questions
- Do you support the Constitution and form of government of the United States?
- Do you understand the full Oath of Allegiance to the United States?
- Are you willing to take the full Oath of Allegiance to the United States?
- If the law requires it, are you willing to bear arms on behalf of the United States?
- If the law requires it, are you willing to perform noncombatant services in the Armed Forces?
Moral Character Questions
- Have you ever claimed to be a U.S. citizen in order to get a benefit or avoid a consequence?
- Have you ever voted in any federal, state, or local election in the United States?
- Have you ever been a member of, or associated with, the Communist Party or any terrorist organization?
- Have you ever participated in persecuting any person because of race, religion, national origin, or political opinion?
Criminal History Questions
- Have you ever been arrested, cited, or detained by any law enforcement officer for any reason?
- Have you ever been charged with committing any crime or offense?
- Have you ever been convicted of a crime or placed in an alternative sentencing or rehabilitation program?
- Have you ever been in jail or prison?
If you answer yes to any criminal history question, bring all certified court documents to your interview. The officer will need to review them to assess your moral character.
Tax and Registration Questions
- Have you filed your federal, state, and local income tax returns for the years required?
- Do you owe any overdue federal, state, or local taxes at this time?
- If you are male, did you register with the Selective Service when required to do so?
