The USCIS citizenship interview is one of the most important appointments in your naturalization journey. Knowing exactly what happens removes anxiety and helps you perform your best.

    Documents to Bring

Always bring: your appointment notice, Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), valid passport and travel documents, a government-issued photo ID, and any documents specifically requested in your appointment letter. Prepare your document packet the night before.

    Arriving at the Field Office

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early. USCIS offices have security screening at the entrance similar to an airport. After checking in at the front desk, wait in the waiting area until an officer calls your name.

Step 1: Oath and Identity Verification

The officer will ask you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth. Always say yes. They then verify your identity and confirm basic information like your full name and current address.

    Step 2: N-400 Application Review

The officer goes through your Form N-400, asking you to confirm your answers. Respond truthfully and consistently with what you submitted. If anything has changed since you filed, tell the officer immediately.

    Step 3: English Language Test

The officer asks you to read one sentence aloud and to write one dictated sentence. You have up to three attempts at each. Sentences come from the official USCIS vocabulary list and are intentionally simple.

    Step 4: Civics Test

The officer asks up to 10 civics questions verbally. You need 6 correct to pass. If you reach 6 correct before all 10 are asked, the officer stops and you have passed. If you do not understand a question, say “Could you please repeat that?” β€” officers are trained to work with non-native English speakers.

    After the Interview

If you pass, you will receive a ceremony notice soon. If you do not pass one or more portions, USCIS schedules a second interview within 60 to 90 days where you retake only the failed portions.
